A must-read book on “Distractions”
The book teaches us how to control the overstimulation of dopamine, which often sabotages focus and productivity. A must-read book if you want to focus on your most important works and avoid distractions.
If you are in your 20’s consider reading this book!
Dopamine Detox by Thibaut Meurisse

Practical Lessons from this book to implement in your life.
1) Understanding the Role of Dopamine.
Dopamine is the neurotransmitter responsible for motivation and pleasure. When overstimulated (e.g., through social media, junk food, or video games), our brain becomes less sensitive, leading to procrastination and lack of motivation.
2) Eliminate Low-Value Activities.
Engaging in distractions like mindless scrolling or binge-watching increases instant gratification, which reduces our ability to focus on hard, meaningful tasks.
3) Train Your Brain to Embrace Discomfort.
Hard, uncomfortable tasks (e.g., deep work, exercise) feel daunting because they require effort without immediate reward. A dopamine detox helps you rewire your brain to associate joy with effort and achievement.
4) Schedule Intentional “Boredom”.
Modern life avoids boredom at all costs, but boredom helps spark creativity and mindfulness. Regular periods of digital detox and quiet allow your brain to rest and think deeply.
3 Actionable Steps
1) Create a Digital Detox Plan.
Schedule specific periods to avoid distractions like social media, gaming, or streaming. Start with small timeframes (e.g., one hour per day) and gradually extend them.
Identify your main distractions, set boundaries (e.g., turn off notifications), and commit to “no-tech” zones like meals or mornings.
2) Replace Instant Gratification with Productive Habits.
Swap dopamine-draining activities (e.g., scrolling on your phone) for tasks that build long-term fulfillment, such as reading, journaling, or exercising.
Keep a list of “productive habits” and turn to them whenever you’re tempted by instant gratification. For instance, replace 10 minutes of scrolling with 10 minutes of learning a new skill.
3) Embrace Boredom and Mindfulness.
Schedule daily moments of stillness or “boredom,” such as meditation or simply sitting without distractions.
Take short breaks to sit quietly and observe your thoughts. This helps your brain reset, reducing mental fatigue and increasing focus.
Today’s wisdom
Distractions are anything that takes your attention away from your main task, like notifications, multitasking, or even overthinking. While distractions may provide short-term pleasure or relief, they hinder progress, reduce focus, and cause stress when tasks remain unfinished.
Focus on one task at a time. Break work into chunks and use tools like the Pomodoro Technique (25 minutes of work, 5 minutes of rest) to build your focus muscles.
